A new dawn is on the horizon for Tanzania’s aviation industry as the Boeing 737 Max 9 plane landed for the first time in Tanzania on October 3, 2023.
The plane’s arrival, takes place at Julius Nyerere Airport, Terminal I, marks a significant step in the nation’s efforts to expand its aviation industry and establish Tanzania as a primary transport and logistics hub in East Africa.
Tanzania has committed a substantial amount of TZS468 billion shillings (approximately USD201 million) to purchase five new aircraft, including two Boeing 737 Max 9 planes. This investment is part of the government’s strategy to strengthen Air Tanzania’s reach as a regional passenger and cargo carrier. The Transport Minister, Makame Mbarawa, announced these plans during a recent budget tabling in the National Assembly.
The ambitious project includes contracts for two Boeing 737 Max 9 planes, one Boeing 787-8, one Boeing 767-300F freighter, and two DHC 8 Q400s. All new aircraft are scheduled for delivery in early 2023.
The acquisition of these aircraft is a strategic move to broaden Air Tanzania’s local and international reach, aiming to make Tanzania a key transport and logistics hub in East Africa. Over the past nine months, the airline welcomed three new aircraft to its fleet, including two A220-300s, each with a passenger capacity of 132, and one DHC 8 Q400 turboprop with seating for 76 passengers.
As of April 2022, Air Tanzania’s active fleet had grown from eight in February 2020 to 11. The airline’s recent performance, despite facing financial challenges due to the pandemic, has been commendable. From July 2021 to April 2022, Air Tanzania transported 53% more passengers compared to the previous year, totalling 663,016 passengers. In the same period, the airline exported 1,953 tonnes of cargo, marking a 70% increase from the 1,152 tonnes transported in 2020-21.
The incoming Boeing 737 Max 9 is part of a larger expansion plan that includes the addition of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a Boeing 767-300F, and two DHC 8 Q400s. The additional aircraft will significantly aid Air Tanzania’s expansion ambitions and help position Tanzania as a major transport and logistics hub in East Africa.
Internationally, Air Tanzania has launched new routes to Lubumbashi, DRC, Nairobi, Kenya, and Ndola, Zambia. Domestically, the airline has expanded its network with flights between Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Mwanza. It also resumed flights between Dar es Salaam and Mtwara. As of April 2022, Air Tanzania had 26 stations, including 15 domestic ones and 11 international ones.
The arrival of the Boeing 737 Max 9 signifies a new era in Tanzania’s aviation industry. The addition of these aircraft to the Air Tanzania fleet demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening the national airline and establishing Tanzania as a major player in East Africa’s transportation and logistics sector. The increased passenger and cargo capacities are expected to boost tourism, trade, and investment in the country.
While the aviation industry worldwide has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, the significant investments and expansion plans of Air Tanzania signal a hopeful future and a firm belief in the industry’s recovery. As the Boeing 737 Max 9 makes its way to Tanzania, it carries with it not just the promise of improved air travel, but also the potential for significant economic growth and development in the region.
